Your best clients probably come through referrals. But if you can't predict when those referrals will arrive, you don't have a pipeline. You have luck.
And when the introductions slow down, you're left with two choices. Wait and hope someone sends business your way. Or start cold outreach to strangers who have no reason to trust you yet.
There's another way. Let me guide you on...

Most fractional CMOs get their first clients from people who already know them. A former colleague. A past client. A friend. Someone who happens to know someone who needs a CMO.
It works. Until it doesn't.
The introductions slow down. The pipeline gets quiet. And suddenly you're wondering: “Where is my next client coming from?”
That's when cold outreach starts looking like your only option. But fractional CMO work is difficult to sell cold. A business owner can't test-drive you before hiring you. They have to trust you first, and one of the fastest ways to earn that trust is a recommendation from someone they already trust.
Casey learned this the hard way. He had what felt like one of his strongest sales calls ever with a great-fit prospect. They liked him. Then they hired another fractional CMO. Later, the prospect told him why:
“Talent-wise, they're equal to you. The reason we hired them is because they came as a direct referral from our CFO.”
Casey's takeaway: “I was cold. That other person was warm.”
That's the difference a trusted introduction can make. And you don't have to leave those introductions to chance.
The goal isn't hundreds of contacts. It's the right relationships.
Casey's planning target is simple: one new client a quarter.
The workshop shows you how to work backwards from that target and build a small network of professionals who already serve the business owners you want to work with.
You'll identify your first 20 potential partners. Then you'll narrow that list toward the roughly 12 to 14 active partnerships that can support your referral plan.
This isn't about becoming a networking machine. It's about knowing:
For 90 minutes, Casey teaches one piece at a time. A volunteer builds it with him on screen. Then you get two or three minutes to build yours. You post the result in the chat, and then you move on.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have:
Your sentence.
Your 20 partner names.
Your first message.
Your hand-off agreement.
You'll have the actual pieces of a referral partner system you can start using.
Write the one sentence a partner can repeat weeks after meeting you, so they know exactly who you help, what problem you solve and what outcome you create.
Identify the complaints your ideal clients actually make that should cause a partner to think: “They need a fractional CMO.”
Learn what separates a real referral partner from someone who simply knows your name.
Work backwards from the planning target so you know how many conversations, prospects and active partnerships your system needs.
Build your list from people you already know, people you've referred business to and the professionals your existing clients already trust.
Filter potential partners based on whether they already serve your kind of owner, see that owner before you do, think about business development and aren't competing with you.
Identify the professionals who can naturally introduce you, including fractional CFOs, CTOs and sales leaders, EOS implementers, accountants and private equity firms.
Give a potential partner an easy way to understand who you serve, what you fix and what to listen for.
Write the message that starts with the partner's clients and invites a conversation, without asking them to “send referrals.”
Know what to ask when you meet a potential partner, so you can discover their ideal clients, trigger phrases, non-fits and preferred hand-off.
Agree in advance on how introductions happen, how quickly you respond, how you follow up and how you keep your partner informed.
Put the important details in writing, including communication, confidentiality and any referral fees, before the first introduction.
If you're ready, send your first partner message during the workshop. Then type “sent” in the chat.
Bonus #1 — The Workshop Replay
Miss part of the session? Want to watch a step again while you build? You'll keep lifetime access to the recording.
Bonus #2 — The “I Have Clients For You” Swipe File
Get the one-page partner sheet plus 14 ready-to-edit messages, including the first message designed to get a partner meeting booked.
Bonus #3 — The Twenty Names Calculator + Partner Tracker
Start with your one-new-client-a-quarter planning target. Work backwards to figure out how many partners you need. Then track the people, partnerships and introductions that make up your referral system.
Bonus #4 — The No-Surprises Referral Partner Agreement
This is the example agreement Casey wishes he'd had before a partner unexpectedly asked for 15% for life. Use it as a starting point for your own agreement, then adapt it with your own lawyer.
Bonus #5 — Your 20-Minute Referral Partner Implementation Call
After the workshop, you'll get a one-on-one call with the CMOx team. Bring your 20 names, your sentence and your first message. Use the call to apply the referral partner system to your specific niche and figure out your next move.
More than 750 marketers have joined the CMOx Accelerator to build their fractional CMO practices. He teaches this workshop live, and he'll walk you through every step of building your referral partner system.
Your next client may already be sitting inside someone else's network. A fractional CFO. An EOS implementer. A fractional CTO. A sales leader. An accountant. A private equity firm. Someone who is already having conversations with the exact business owners you want to reach.
The question is whether they know what to listen for. Whether they know what you do. Whether they know when to introduce you. And whether you've made the introduction easy.
You'll build all four in this workshop.
Louise was introduced to her client by a creative director who “recognize[d] that they needed strategy.” Dillon narrowed his niche to businesses that sell to churches, and now, in his words, “they all talk to each other, and they all refer me.”
Live October 1
Thursday, 12:00 to 1:30 PM Eastern · 9:00 to 10:30 AM Pacific
90 minutes on Zoom · $100 · Lifetime replay included
You don't need to promise yourself you'll “work on referrals someday.”
You'll have the first 20 names. The sentence. The message. The agreement. And a plan for turning those relationships into a referral channel you can actually work on.
The live build happens October 1.
